Oscar Pistorius Case, Trial & Verdict: Murder Trial To Be Broadcast on TV
A South African judge has decided to allow parts of the Oscar Pistorius trial to be televised, citing the importance of squashing the perception that rich and poor people are treated differently in South Africa.
This would mark the first time that a trial ends up on TV in South Africa. Among the parts of the trial that are expected to be televised include the opening and closing arguments, the evidence from expects, and the sentencing comments from the judge.
The 27-year-old, who is currently out on bail, is facing murder and weapons charges stemming from the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on the fateful Valentine's Day evening in 2012 at the former Olympic track star's home in Pretoria, South Africa.
The former Olympian has fallen hard since his magical days on the track. Despite being hailed as a national icon in South Africa, Pistorius has lost the innocent image most people around the world had of him. Before we know, he could end up behind bars for at least a quarter of a century.
However, there is a trial to determine all of that and Pistorius has maintained his innocence. Pistorius has admitted to killing Steenkamp but says he did so accidentally. From his bedroom he shot through the bathroom door when he says he believed an intruder had broken in. Steenkamp, who was in the bathroom, was killed in the shooting.
How much of this is true is in question and reports have indicated that the two were having an argument in the moments leading up to the shooting. Pistorius has had a reputation for having some temper issues in his past.
