Pacquiao vs Maywether Fight 2014: Floyd to Fight Marcos Maidana on May 3
For some time now, Floyd "Money" Mayweather has been teasing boxing fans around the globe about a possible fight with Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao. But during Money's birthday last Monday, Feb. 24, the WBC title holder got serious as he announced his next fight.
On May 3, he will be facing off against Argentinean fighter Marcos Maidana, BBC Sports reports. The fight will be a unification bout that will pit Mayweather's WBC welterweight belt against Maidana's WBA title. The match, which was formally announced by Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions, will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The announcement of the unified bout automatically disregards any talks about a fight between Mayweather and Amir Khan for this year. According to Bleacher Report, Khan was so sure that he will get a chance to go toe-to-toe against the undefeated boxer that he cancelled a scheduled match against Devon Alexander.
Mayweather made his decision to go with Maidana after watching his impressive performance in defeating Adrien Broner via unanimous decision last December. In an article on the Daily Mail, he said, "Marcos Maidana's last performance brought him to my attention. He is an extremely skilled fighter who brings knockout danger to the ring."
He added, "I think this is a great fight for me and he deserves the opportunity to see if he can do what 45 other have tried to do before him - beat me."
But Maidana is feeling confident that he will be the first fighter to put the Money down. He said, "I am extremely happy to be facing Floyd Mayweather because it will give me the opportunity to show the world that I am the best welterweight in the division. I just handed a great defensive fighter his first loss and. I plan to do the same to Mayweather. I don't care whether he's the best and undefeated. I will bring some real Latino power to him on May 3."
