Honduran Independence Day: America Ferrera, Rocsi Diaz, Satcha Pretto & More Famous Hondureños
Sept. 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, but it is also a big day for a particular group of Latinos. The Central American nation of Honduras celebrates its independence from Spain on the same day and in honor of this we have a made a list of a few famous Hondureños you should get to know.
1. America Ferrera
Known to most people as the star of "Ugly Betty," the actress was named in honor of the dream her family had when immigrating from Tegucigalpa. The 31-year-old star has appeared in several films, including "Real Women Have Curves," "End of Watch," "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" series, "Cesar Chavez" and voices one of the characters in the "How to Train Your Dragon" animated films.
2. Rocsi Diaz
Born in Tegucigalpa, Diaz is known for being the co-host of the BET show "106 & Park" and is also an entertainment correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. She has also made a career as a DJ on various radio stations over the years such as 97.9 The Beat, Power 92 and Boston's Hot 97.7.
3. Hype Williams
The half-Honduran filmmaker and music video producer has worked with some of the biggest artists in the music industry, such as TLC, Biggie Smalls, Nas, Jay Z, No Doubt, Pharrell Williams, Janet Jackson, Coldplay, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey and Kanye West, to name a few. Williams has won a variety of awards, including a few Billboard Music Awards, BET Awards and was honored with the MTV Video Vanguard Award in 2006.
4. Francia Raisa
The 27-year-old actress is known for her role of Adrian Lee in the ABC Family series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager." Raisa, who is Honduran and Mexican, has also appeared in films like "Bring It On: All or Nothing" and television shows such as "CSI" and "The Mindy Project."
5. Carlos Mencia
The 47-year-old comedian, who was born in San Pedro Sula, tackles issues of class, race and politics on his Comedy Central show "Mind of Mencia." Mencia, who is the second-oldest child of a family of 18 children, has also appeared as a guest star in shows like "Moesha," "The Shield" and "The Proud Family."
6. Satcha Pretto
The Emmy-Award winning journalist serves as a news anchor on "Despierta America." The television personality has also worked for other notable news programs like "Primer Impacto" and "Anderson Cooper 360." One of Pretto's most memorable career milestones was her interview with renowned writer Isabel Allende in 2006.
7. David Archuleta
The 2008 "American Idol" runner-up, who is part Honduran, was raised in Miami, Florida. The 24-year-old singer has released several albums since his stint on the singing competition and appeared on shows like "Hannah Montana" and "iCarly." Archuleta is also known for his dedication to various charities and for taking part in missionary work.
