TMZ Sports first reported that New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul suffered some serious damage to his right hand in a 4th of July fireworks accident during a massive fireworks show in South Florida.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com then added that JPP's right index finger was removed as "cutting off his finger simplifies and accelerates his recovery." He was expected to be back and ready in about two months.

A skin grafting procedure was performed on much of Pierre-Paul's right hand and forearm, but he possibly has a fracture on his right thumb and may also have fractures in his remaining fingers. Pins were placed on his hand to repair the fractures, as reported by Bleacher Report.

Bleacher Reports sources said that "He was told that he could repair the finger, but it was probably going to take multiple procedures and even after all of that, the finger was probably going to be disfigured and not very functional, if at all."

One of JPP's doctors said that removing the index finger won't have a big effect on him playing football, "For the purpose of grabbing, pulling and tackling, the index finger is not as important as the middle finger and ring finger." The doctor also said that damage to the thumb is more catastrophic for the two-time Pro-Bowler.

Now, ESPN reports that Pierre-Paul's thumb was also damaged. Multiple sources says that he is missing the top portion of his thumb on top of the index finger that has been removed due to the 4th of July accident. However, the missing part of the thumb is not important and will not delay his recovery.

ESPN also noted that his right middle finger was repaired three days before the Giants looked at his hand. The procedure Pierre-Paul reportedly had on Sept. 4 was to seal a fresh wound on his middle finger.

After examining his hand on Sept. 7, the Giants think that JPP's injury is worse and he could miss the entire season, according to a separate report from ESPN. He has a $14.8 million franchise tender that was not rescinded by the team but remains unsigned. If the 26-year-old signs the conrtact, he will be placed on a non-football injury list. The Giants have no plans on playing JPP if he is less than 100 percent.

Pierre-Paul is currently working out on his own, training with his trainers and coaches and rehabbing with his doctors near his home in South Florida. He even posted one of his workout sessions on his Instagram account.
