'Iron Man 4' Plot & Spoilers: Tony Stark, Mary Jane Watson Romance Featured in 2019 Film? [Rumors]
December 2015 will mark the arrival of the "Invincible Iron Man" comic book series. The revamped solo title will continue Tony Stark's exploits as the head of a multimillion-dollar tech corporation as well as the titular superhero.
Of course, Stark will be joined by a familiar cast of supporting characters that have already been a part of the Iron Man lore. Surprisingly, Mary Jane Watson will be one of them.
With the arrival of Spider-Man into the MCU and with inclusion of Mary Jane as a mainstay in the "Invincible Iron Man" comic series, it's easy for casual fans and movie pundits alike to link the two scenarios together.
But why exactly is Marvel's most popular redhead included in the upcoming "Iron Man" title?
According to "Invincible Iron Man" writer Brian Bendis via Marvel, the idea popped into his head during a publishing retreat. Several characters were being talked about yet he noticed no one was developing a story arch for Mary Jane Watson.
"I sat with that for a while and I always go to this place in my head where I [wonder] what the most interesting thing I would like to see that character do now and it fell right into the ideas I was already cooking for Tony Stark," Bendis explained.
Newsarama reported that Mary Jane and Peter Parker have been divorced in the comics.
Meanwhile, Master Herald mentioned that the two haven't been romantically involved in the recent "Spider-Man" comic book storyline. Furthermore, current moviegoers might think of Gwen Stacey first as the web slinger's love interest due to recent Spider-Man movies.
Could this open the floodgate for a Stark and Mary Jane romance?
As far as "Invincible Iron Man" is concerned, Bendis had this to say:
"They know each other. She used to live in Avengers Tower. But that's all I'm going to say for now because what kind of relationship they end up having is a big part of what I would like people to buy the book for. But what I can tell you is that it is new territory for both Tony and Mary Jane. And that is pretty exciting to write."
The 48-year-old writer added that Mary Jane will be a "grown-up woman" in the upcoming "Iron Man" comic series. Fans shouldn't expect a damsel in distress since she is "ready for a kick ass second act."
Marvel Studios has started discussing "Iron Man 4" but no official announcement has been made. The possibility for the studio to draw inspiration from the upcoming comic series is still left open.
In the meantime, here is how Mary Jane Watson will look like in "Invincible Iron Man."
