AS Roma vs. Barcelona Analysis: The 1-1 Champions League Tie By the Numbers
Barcelona started its Champions League title defense with a rather disappointing 1-1 draw against Roma.
Despite being the away side, many expected Los Cules to walk away with three points and put their stamp on the tournament. It was not meant to be.
The team came out looking convincing in the opening moments of the contest and eventually got a deserved goal. However an error from goalie Marc-Andre Ter Stegen wound up costing the team and blunting the attack. Barcelona in effect could not do much to find a winner and had to settle for a tie.
Here are some numbers to sum up the 1-1 stalemate.
0 - The number of shots on target that Neymar had on the evening in a game that saw the Brazilian at his most ineffective.
1 - The number of goals between the dangerous MSN. Luis Suarez was there to put how the only goal for Barcelona in the match while his attacking partners Neymar and Lionel Messi came up empty. Messi also finished the game with one shot on target despite doing his utmost to get the ball on goal (he had eight shots on goal).
2 - The number of goals that Ter Stegen has conceded from 50 or more meters this season, a rather damning fact for the German keeper.
3 - The number of shots on target for both teams on the game, despite the fact that Barcelona had a 16-8 margin on overall attempts. It is rather shocking that despite its clear superiority across the pitch, Barcelona was largely ineffective against Roma throughout the match.
5 - The number of times that Messi lost the ball in this game, a statistic that is rather rare with the superstar. Throughout his career, he has averaged losing the ball 2.6 times per game; five is certainly an aberration but also a sign of Roma's tight defense. Every time Messi had the ball, he was met with numerous aggressive defenders looking to force him into a dribble or a bad pass. It was not a vintage performance from Messi who remains stuck on one goal in his last four games.
Roma's Alessandro Florenzi also made five interceptions and five clearances in this match, making him the undisputed man of the match.
6 - It is now six straight games that Blaugrana has been limited to scoring two goals or less. Of those six games, the team has only managed two goals on one occasion, and that came this past weekend against Atletico Madrid. Something is not right with Barcelona's attacking prowess. It might be tough competition, but this team was finding ways to score against the world's best time and again in 2014-15.
56 - Alessandro Florenzi's goal from 56 meters out was undeniably the play of the game. It was goal that required awareness, pace (the ball was on the boundary line) and pinpoint accuracy to ricochet off the post and into the net. It was also the reason Roma managed to walk away with one point at home against the hardest team in its group.
