Taking your time to relax and enjoy a nice long book can be great, but when you're a college student prepping for an exam or an editor working with a deadline, speed reading can be in your best interest.

Now there's an app that is promising to help procrastinators and slow readers consume large texts in record time.

Spritz is a speed reading app designed to help readers get through books and texts much faster. How much faster? Well, while the average college-level reader usually reads at a rate of about 200 to 400 words per minute (according to the Huffington Post), Spritz can jack that number up to a potential 1,000 words per minute.

Here's how the technology works: relying on the concept that readers waste a lot time moving their eyes from one word to the next, Spritz's new app quickens a reader's pace by flashing one word at a time.

While other apps such as Velocity and Fast Reader have relied on similar concepts, Spritz sets itself apart in that it utilizes a word's "fixation point", or as Spritz refers to it, "Optimal Recognition Point" (ORP). When you read, your mind unconsciously focuses on a word's fixation point allowing you to quickly process its meaning. Spritz makes it easier by highlighting the word's fixation point with red font and hash marks.

Using one word at time also makes Spritz ideal for mobile devices with small screens. Spritz is looking into implanting its app on smartphones and wearable teachnology such as smartwatches and Google Glass. A Spritz email application will be available on the upcoming Samsung Gear 2 and Galaxy S5.
