The New York Film Festival has announced that it will screen Ridley Scott's latest film "The Martian."

Every year the festival tries to showcase a sneak peak of an upcoming film. Last year it showed "While We're Young" by Noah Baumbach after its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. In years before that, the festival showcased unfinished versions of Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and Martin Scorsese's "Hugo."

For the 53rd year of the festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center will screen "The Martian" in RealD 3D at the Alice Tully Hall. The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, where it scored rave reviews and generated Oscar buzz.

Many also noted that it was a return to form for director Scott, who had made a number of films that received mixed reviews over the past few years. It was also hailed as this year's "Gravity" and "Interstellar," and many have already speculated that the movie will likely win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and Sound Effects.

The movie is based on the Andy Weir book of the same name and tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney, who gets stranded on the red planet after being presumed dead by his crew mates.

The movie has an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara and Michael Peña. The movie also stars Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Donald Glover and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Scott is best known for his work on "Blade Runner," "Gladiator" and "Black Hawk Down." He has also directed "American Gangster," "The Counselor," "Robin Hood," "Prometheus" and "A Good Year." He last directed "Exodus: Gods and Kings."

"The Martian" is slated to hit theaters on Oct. 2 alongside "Sicario" and "Freeheld." "The Martian" is rated PG-13 for some strong language, injury images and brief nudity.
