Facebook was down Thursday afternoon, affecting users accessing the website on desktops and those using the app on mobile services.

An error message on the homepage for Facebook read, "Sorry, something went wrong," followed by, "We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can," Tech Radar reports.

Another message displayed, "Service Unavailable," when users tried to refresh the page during the outage.

CNBC reported the outage, which began around 12:30 p.m. EDT, was brief but widespread. This is the second time in two weeks that the social networking site has experienced problems.

Even Facebook's own "Platform Status" page -- which the company uses to announce when the service is down, why it is down and when it plans to be fixed -- was not working properly Thursday, The Independent reports.

The last major outage for Facebook occurred in January. A hacking group originally claimed credit for taking down the site, but the cause was later revealed to be an error by Facebook themselves.

DownDetector, a website that allows users to report problems they are having with other websites, received almost 1,500 down reports around the lunch hour. Most users reported that they couldn't reach the site at all, and some reported that they couldn't log in.

Users who were unable to get access to Facebook Thursday were missing out on the brand new 360-degree video for the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" movie, as well as their normal newsfeeds and the ability to chat with their friends.

About 30 minutes after the first reports of outages on DownDetector, far fewer users, under 400, reported problems with Facebook's services.
