Assassin's Creed Syndicate Gameplay, Characters: Story Trailer Released, Series Introduces 1st Transgender Character
Assassin's Creed Syndicate will not only introduce the series' first playable female character, it will also introduce the first transgender character.
According to Gamespot, the series will introduce Ned Wynert, the first transgender male character in the series. He is one of the quest-giving NPCs in the game. Although there have been other transgender characters throughout video game history, creative director Marc-Alexis Côté stated that he wants to maintain diversity in the Assassin's Creed series.
"Inclusiveness is something that's super important for us as a team." Côté said. "We've made a good push towards diversity and how we approach different subjects in the game."
In the past, the series came under a lot of scrutiny for its lack of playable female characters. The only playable female character in the franchise was Aveline de Grandpré in Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, which was released for the PlayStation Vita in 2012 and later re-released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows in 2014.
In Syndicate, the player controls two main characters, the brother-sister duo of Jacob and Evie Frye.
The game also changed its standard opening statement. In past games, the statement has indicated that the game was "designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs."
Syndicate will open with a message that reads, "Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities."
Assassin's Creed is not the only high-profile game series to include a transgender character. Last year, Dragon Age: Inquisition introduced a transgender character named Cremisius "Krem" Aclassi, who was the first transgender character from game developer BioWare.
Recently, Ubisoft released a story trailer for the highly-anticipated Syndicate. You can check out the trailer below.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate will be in stores on Oct. 23 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will be available for the PC on Nov. 19.
