When “Elementary” returns to CBS in November, not only will Sherlock Holmes be making that hard journey back from addiction, but he will also be dealing with a father he's always had issues with.

Rob Doherty, the executive producer of this contemporary take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle character, recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what was in store for the sleuth in the coming season.

“The new season is picking up right where we left off at the end of Season 3. We are approximately three days after Sherlock’s relapse and one day after the news that Sherlock’s father is coming to New York,” Doherty said.

Season 3 ended with a lot of drama. Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) had relapsed, and his father Morland (John Noble) was coming in to see what he could do to help.

A teaser for the premiere, “The Past Is Parent,” shows there is some major tension between Holmes and his father.

When Watson (Lucy Liu) asks what is wrong with Morland, Holmes loudly answers back, “Dad never shows.”

But he is definitely showing up now.

“The Holmes men are such curious creatures,” said Doherty, who goes on to explain how suspicion the detective will feel about his father coming around. “Once he arrives, Sherlock does not appreciate the attention or the distraction that his dad represents. For him, it’s too little too late.”

Doherty described father and son as having a kind of commonality.

“Sherlock is a consultant to the police, his father Morland, is a consultant to governments and massive corporations,” he said. “So, dad is someone who tends to work from the shadows and grease the skids for much larger entities.”

The Season 4 premiere of “Elementary” airs Nov. 5 on CBS.
