Kim Novak Oscar Speech: Twitter Reacts to Actress' Awkward Speech
Even with Ellen Degeneres failing to satisfy those tired of the Oscar's dull and drab presentation, the award presenters themselves gave viewers plenty to talk (and tweet) about the next day.
There was Harrison Ford, stunting a new earring as he slowly and unenthusiastically talked about the Best Picture nominees with a deer-in-the-headlights look. Then there was John Travolta, who got flack not only for his appearance, but also for his incredible butchering of "Let it Go" singer "Adele Dazeem" (actually known as Idina Menzel).
However, it was an iconic actress of old who got the most heat from social media.
Twitter blew up following Kim Novak's turn on the Oscar stage. The 81-year old actress, star of such classics as Vertigo and The Man With the Golden Arm, seemed incredibly stiff and lost as she joined Matthew McConaughey to present the award for Best Animated Feature to Disney's Frozen. It was also clear that Novak had gotten some facial work done.
Users tweeted harsh criticism of Novak's appearance and demeanor:
"This is the second straight appearance by Kim Novak at the Academy Awards. Last year she appeared in the 'In Memorium' section" tweeted celebrity, Norm Macdonald.
"If Matthew Mcconaughey is really a True Detective he will hunt down Kim Novak's plastic surgeon and have him arrested," said user Josh Shames.
User leslie joked, "Goldie Hawn is Kim Novak three faces ago."
Many others made fun of the irony that Novak was presenting the award for Frozen, while others expressed sadness at a Hollywood culture that pushes women try and maintain youth through plastic surgery.
"If we weren't obsessed w/ advertisers youth craze, Kim Novak may not have had the surgery everyone's tweeting about," tweeted Vicki St. Clair. "It's OK to be 81."
Many, however, were outraged at the lack of respect given to one of Hollywood's greatest actresses.
At one point during the presentation, Novak broke from the script to show her appreciation at the opportunity. "I gotta take a minute just to say, I'm really glad to be here. It's been a long time," said the actress to a resounding applause.
