Batman vs. Superman Movie Update: Costume Designer Talks About Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman's Look
After receiving numerous praise remarks from style magazines around the country for his costume design work on American Hustle, Michael Wilkinson is now tasked with bringing Wonder Woman's costume to life and reinventing Batman's as well.
As The Wrap caught up with Wilkinson at a pre-Oscar party this week, the acclaimed costume designer said designing the Amazonian Princess' outfit a scary prospect and job to accomplish.
"It's so important to get her right. She really deserves to be presented on-screen in her full glory," Wilkinson said. "So what I do is look at the history of how the character has been presented on the big-screen, and the small-screen, and in comic books, and graphic novels ... we try and create a Wonder Woman that's relevant for today's audiences."
Additionally, Wilkinson said the design will keep the comic book's skimpy aspect while portraying a gladiator style, which worked for 300 and Thor. He also said he would be tweaking Superman's costume a bit on the forthcoming film.
Wilkinson is no stranger to the science fiction community as he has previously worked with Zack Snyder on his previous films 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch and Man of Steel.
When Gadot was cast in early December to play Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, in Snyder's untitled Man of Steel sequel, the Internet broke again as it did when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman.
Critics began to wonder how the Princess of Themyscira would fit into the film with two already powerhouse superheroes and questioned if Warner Bros. was just trying to follow the success of Marvel Studios' The Avengers.
It's still a little more than two years away until we can see DC Comics' holy trinity of superheroes grace the silver screen in what is expected to be an action-packed blockbuster as the follow up to 2013's Man of Steel.
As the film is currently in pre-production, the Internet is buzzing with unverifiable rumors and conjecture on what to expect from the tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman flick, which unites Gadot with Henry Cavill, reprising his role as the last son of Krypton and Affleck, playing a weathered and tired caped crusader.
While some protested the redesign, most fanboys rejoiced when Warner Bros. unveiled Superman's suit in 2012, which went away with the traditional red chonies from comic book lore.
Positive comments from Affleck's wife Jennifer Garner and close friend Kevin Smith, recently surfaced regarding the look of Snyder's take on the Batman suit.
"I've seen the suit," Garner told Entertainment Tonight last month. "(It's) unbelievably cool. It's a total reinvention, it looks great."
Wilkinson also told The Wrap that Smith is a great friend to have in terms of the director's positive review and feedback after Snyder showed him a photo of the new suit.
The Man of Steel sequel comes out on May 6, 2016.
