BlackBerry Priv News: First BlackBerry to Use Android Revealed by CEO John Chen
BlackBerry wants to get itself back in the smartphone competition, and to do this, the company has decided to introduce a new smartphone that will use Android.
BlackBerry CEO John Chen was interviewed by Business News Network's Amber Kanwar, and during the video interview, Chen revealed the BlackBerry Priv, the company's smartphone that will use the Android instead of BlackBerry's own BB operating system. This is a big change for BlackBerry, who has boasted that its own operating system comes with strong security features and other unique features.
BlackBerry has found itself in a losing battle against its competitors, CNET reported. The company hopes by using Android, customers will once again be interested in buying BlackBerry devices again.
Apple and Samsung, as well as other competitors, have enticed customers to stay loyal to their brands by constantly updating their devices. BlackBerry used to be very popular, especially among business users, but that is no longer the case.
Chen wanted to show off the new BlackBerry Priv to the public. Unfortunately, Chen ran into some troubles introducing the Priv, which means both privacy and privilege.
The BlackBerry Priv will have a 5.5-inch curved screen and "all of the latest specs," Chen said.
In the demo for the Priv, Chen has trouble opening up the Google Chrome web browser, and it takes him several tries before it finally opens. Chen blames the bugs on the phone being a "demo unit."
Although the demo does not go as planned, Chen highlights the most important feature of the BlackBerry Priv, the slide out QWERTY keyboard. The full keyboard slides out from the bottom of the phone and gives users what they are used to in BlackBerry devices, a physical keyboard instead of an touch-screen keyboard. There is still the option to use Android's touch-screen keyboard if users prefer.
Chen said the BlackBerry operating system is still loved by users, but there is not enough apps for it. Because of this, the Priv uses the classic styling of a BlackBerry phone but a different operating system.
The BlackBerry Priv is expected to be released in November of this year.
