The next iPhone could have some waterproof features, according to rumors out of Japan that surfaced on Sunday.

Mac Otakara, a Japanese site that has revealed rumors about iPhones in the past, is reporting that the iPhone 7 is expected to have more "rugged" features, including waterproof and dustproof technology, Apple Insider reports.

The Japanese website cites a post from the Chinese blog Weibo, which suggests the next iPhone prototypes are being equipped with protective features to keep them from failing when exposed to water and dust.

Apple might be trying to adapt technology from the Apple Watch, which is a device that is designed for active lifestyles. The iPhone 7 could come with a new processor system that would keep water away from the internal chip. The device could also use water-tight gaskets.

Even more advanced technology could be used that would divert water away from critical electronic components. Finally, silicone seals could also be used at points where water could otherwise get into the device, patents reveal.

The Weibo post also shows that Apple might be moving away from their all-metal bodies. The original iPhones were made of aluminum, but the second generation versions used a polycarbonate shell. For the iPhone 4, the company added glass to the back of the device. Apple first went to an all-aluminum body with the iPhone 5 in 2012.  

When the iPhone grew in size for the iPhone 6, the all-aluminum body caused some problems. Some users of the iPhone 6 Plus reported that their handsets were bending during normal usage. This prompted Apple to use stronger 7000 series aluminum for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. It is rare for Apple to make such a big change for "s" models.

The next iPhone may not be released until September, 2016. Between now and then, plenty of news regarding the next device will likely be released.
