'Batman v Super: Dawn of Justice' News Update: Will New Movie Break Box Office Records?
While there are still a number of months left until the release of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," box office analysts are wondering how well the film will perform.
Warner Bros. is attempting to jump on the bandwagon of creating a DC world in the same way that Marvel did with their comic books. In 2013, "Man of Steel" became a worldwide sensation as it opened with $116 million domestically and went on to make $291 million. The film also made over $668 million worldwide.
The movie was a huge hit Warner Bros. instantly had plans for a sequel. However, the company decided to use its other properties and create an entire universe. The result was to add Batman, a character that has been successful for the studio and which is among the most popular superheroes of all time. The decision was most likely prompted from the success of the Christopher Nolan trilogy which made over $1 billion domestically and was a critical success.
The studio also added Wonder Woman to the mix, another popular character in the comics and one that is likely to get a standalone film. Additionally, the film will also see Aquaman and rumors point the Flash also appearing in the film.
With all these elements it is likely that the movie will beat the March Box office record. Currently "The Hunger Games" holds the record with an opening of $152 million. Based on the last Superman film and "The Dark Rises," which opened with $160 million, it is likely that the film could open close to $180 million. It is also to take into account how well "The Avengers" movie did and how "Batman v Superman" is shaping up to be similar to that.
"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" stars Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck and is slated to open on March 25, 2016.
