Legend of Zelda Movie Casting News Update: Could Link Be a Woman in Film?
Link is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. Everything from his blond hair and his silence in "The Legend of Zelda" movies has become a signature in the video game community.
That might all change with Nintendo's rumored upcoming film based on the video games. Rumor has it that Link might wind up being a woman.
According to Nintendo General manager Takashi Tezuka, there is a chance that the character might be reimagined as a woman.
"It would be very fun and awesome if Link was played by a female actress -- a boyish female actress," he said according to MTV.
It would certainly be a bold move for the character, shifting the story toward a female-centric narrative with Princess Zelda likely also tagging along with Link in the new movie. In the gaming series, Zelda is almost always the damsel-in-distress with Link coming to her aid in almost every title. There has been a gradual shift of empowerment for the Princess in recent titles, but she almost always finds herself a prisoner in the hands of a masculine villain.
Having Link as a woman may nullify the slowly burgeoning love story hinted at in more recent installments, but it would stick with the theme of empowering women in modern media.
Nintendo recently revealed that they were interested in potentially pursuing leveraging their popular franchises to make movies. A "Zelda" franchise was hinted at earlier this year and some believed that Netflix would be behind the production. However, Nintendo eventually rejected the notion outright.
There have also been rumors that Nintendo and Sony might be working together to create a new Super Mario Bros movie. The film is apparently slated to be animated as Nintendo will undoubtedly look to avoid another mess like the live-action Mario film from 1993 which was met with derision from fans and critics alike.
