Helen Mirren Retires From On-Screen Nudity at 70, Says Nudity is ‘Nothing to Get Your Knickers in a Twist Over'
English actress Helen Mirren is famous for her acting ability, which is best exemplified in her award-winning portrayals of Queen Elizabeth.
Mirren has a wonderful sense of humor. Her giddiness for a good time has made her a favorite co-worker among celebrities. Yet, it is her "legendary" breasts that often steal the spotlight.
Mirren's "pleasure pillows," as she refers to them, have become so famous that they inspired a "Saturday Night Live" sketch.
In a new interview with CBS' "Remember That Time" journalist Alan Cumming, Mirren talks about how she came to perform on-screen nudity and declares that she is officially retiring from it.
The Oscar and Tony winner is most famous for appearing nude in the 1979 film "Caligula" and the 2003 movie "Calendar Girls." She told Cumming that she was able to bare it all rather easily.
"Does it really matter?" she said, remembering when she was first asked to appear topless. "I was doing nude scenes [from] the first moment I started doing movies. It was the era. It seemed to be nothing to get your knickers in a twist over."
Mirren has admitted that she's very comfortable in her own skin. In 2004, she was named "Naturist of the Year" by British Naturism.
"Many thanks to British Naturism for this great honor. I do believe in naturism and am my happiest on a nude beach with people of all ages and races!" she said at the time.
The Academy Award winning "The Queen" actress has said in many interviews that when people of all races and body types get naked, it is liberating.
"I'm a naturist at heart. I love being on beaches where everyone is naked. Ugly people, beautiful people, old people, whatever. It's so unisexual and so liberating," she told Radio Times in 2014.
The last time Mirren appeared nude was during a 2011 photo shoot for New York magazine, but she said the time has come to retire from commercial nudity.
"That's the good thing about getting older," the 70-year-old said. "You don't have to do that sort of thing any more. [Now] my pleasure pillows are purely for my husband."
