Oregon officials say that a gunman opened fire at a community college in Douglas County on Thursday, reportedly killing 10 people and wounding about 20 others.

Preliminary reports indicate that 10 people were killed and more than 20 others were injured during a shooting at Oregon's Umpqua Community College (UCC), said Oregon State Police spokesman Bill Fugate.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Dwes Hutson said officers responded around 10:40 a.m., local time, to reports of a shooting at the college campus, reports The Oregonian.

A Douglas County official said that the shooter has since been detained. Meanwhile, County commissioner Chris Boice told KGW-TV that the suspect was "brought down."

The shooter is "down and in custody," Boice said. He added that 15 to 20 people were injured in the incident, while one woman was shot in the chest.

Authorities asked both students and residents in Roseburg, Oregon, where the school is located, not to go to the campus.

"Active shooter at UCC. Please stay away from the area," tweeted Fire District No. 2 that serves Douglas County.

The News Review newspaper in Roseburg reported that police and emergency crews were called to the scene at the local college, which is located on the North Umpqua River. The river serves Roseburg and the greater Douglas County area. After opening in 1964, the college has grown to serve 20,000 full and part-time students.

One woman named Kayla Marie expressed the horror that was taking place in real-time on Twitter.

"Students are running everywhere. Holy God," she tweeted from her Twitter account @KP_KaylaMarie. "Omg there's someone shooting on campus," she added.

"There are a lot of thing that I want my home state of Oregon to be known for, but a mass shooting is not one of them. #oregon," added Stacy Brady via Twitter.
