‘Cabin in the Woods’ Sequel News: Lionsgate Vies For Second Film From Director Drew Goddard, Joss Whedon
The 2012 movie "The Cabin in the Woods" has had several headlines lately, but none more so than the possibility of a sequel for the much loved horror film.
According to Den of Geek, that sequel is on the priority list for Lionsgate Film Studio, but there are still a few hurdles to get over.
Director Drew Goddard spoke recently about the project, which is still very much a possibility and even more so now the studio is on board.
Considering the way the film ended, there seems to be no room for a sequel. But that is not quite the case with most horror movies.
"It doesn't. But that being said, the fun thing about 'Cabin' is, the rules are pretty crazy," Goddard said.
"We get away with a lot of crazy stuff. So, I'm sure we could figure it out if we got inspired to. I know Joss [Whedon] and I both feel like we don't want to tarnish what we did with the first one. With a sequel, we'd only do it if it made us laugh hard enough, I suppose."
With that in mind, the studio is all for a sequel to the film, which enjoyed modest success in the theatrical run, but quickly gained a cult-following for the film and fans all over social media have clamored for more.
But Goddard and Joss Whedon have said a sequel would have to make sense.
"There's nothing in the hopper right now, but who knows? The way Joss and I work, we might wake up tomorrow and go, 'let's go do that,' or whatever," Goddard said.
According to Box Office Mojo, "The Cabin in the Woods" brought in over $66 million worldwide. They did not list the production budget for the film.
