‘The Mindy Project’ Season 4 Episode 4: Mindy Discovers the Pains of the Working Mom
Leo, the new baby, marked the true end of Mindy Lahiri's life of singlehood, but is it the end of her career as well? With the latest episode, Hulu's "The Mindy Project" put the spotlight on a problem many modern mothers face: the choice between staying at home or going back to work.
Mindy's maternity leave is over, but Danny told her it's fine if she decided to not go back to work. He even preferred it, pointing out the difficulties of being a working mom. However, Mindy was reluctant to consider it.
"I don't know," she mused. "According to movie posters it's just like carrying a briefcase and a baby bottle at the same time."
On her way to work, Mindy got into a fight with a man who calls her out for breastfeeding on the train. After a barrage of sexist comments and the man leading the other male passengers in the train in chanting "put them away," she buttoned up and walked away.
Meanwhile, Danny was debating on what "push present" to give Mindy for "enduring the pains of labor." Over the course of the episode, he considered a choreographed dance, a "luxurious cranberry turtleneck" and jewelry, all wrong for various reasons.
Mindy walked in the hospital with Leo, but surprises awaited her. The new mother was dismayed to realize another doctor has been taking over her duties, Dr. Jody Kimball-Kinney, the very same man who shamed her for breastfeeding on the train, with his sister Collette in tow. Even worse, everyone loved Jody.
In contrast, Mindy hated Jody. As she continued ranting to Danny, he tried to convince her to consider being a stay-at-home mom. However, the star of the show was determined to regain her rightful place at the top of the hospital, so she began to plot against the new doctor.
Her campaign against Jody culminated in a confrontation that had Mindy accusing him of being sexist for discouraging a patient's husband from being in the birthing room. To everyone's surprise, the new doctor unapologetically admitted that he was sexist and launched into a tirade that garnered applause from their colleagues. Frustrated, Mindy flashed her breasts at Jody and accidentally squirts milk to his face.
The recent debacle caused Mindy to finally call it quits on work. Back home, she begin to regret her impulsive resignation, but when Danny came home with his present, a tattoo of "Leo" over his heart and a heart-felt speech for her choice, she opted to stand by her decision.
In a previous interview with Refinery29, Kaling said, "I think that having a baby has made Mindy a little different, but she can't change who she is." Now, Mindy's out of singlehood and out of her beloved job. What other changes are in store?
