Bobby Shmurda Arrest Update: Rapper Denied Bail Again, Hires New Lawyer [Listen]
Rapper Bobby Shmurda was denied bail for the eighth time at a Manhattan court on Monday, and he has hired a third lawyer.
Officials arrested the Brooklyn rapper last December, along with several other members of the GS9 crew, on allegations that they are connected to a long investigation of gang violence and drug trafficking. They had at least 10 illegal guns in their possession at the time of the arrest.
"What they hearing about that night is bullsh*t and is not true," Shmurda said in a phone interview with the "Ebro in the Morning" show back in February. "The cops been out for me for forever. They been trying to slay me forever but they never catch me with nothing."
He went on to speculate that the police officers who arrested him may have planted the guns on GS9.
"It might be like four or five cops that had guns that grabbed me up. And they was like, 'I don't want my kids listening to your music,'" Shmurda said just before the line cut out.
Show host Ebro Darden said he met with people who were working in the studio on the night of the arrest, who said police told them, "I can't believe that you guys are supporting this kid and helping him make music. People like this should be locked behind bars in prison."
In a follow up interview the next week, Shmurda, whose real name is Ackquille Pollard, confirmed that he believes he was arrested because the cops do not want their kids listening to his music.
His new lawyer, Alex Spiro of Brafman & Associates, appeared in court for the ongoing case for the first time on Monday.
Meanwhile, the "Hot Boy" rapper was hit with additional charges over the summer, when his alleged girlfriend brought a knife into prison for him back in July.
He was hit with additional felony and misdemeanor charges for promoting prison contraband, perjury and criminal possession of a weapon, but the 20-year-old rapper pleaded not guilty at the time.
Shmurda was arrested in December, just months after his "Hot Boy" single made it to No. 6 in Billboard's Top 100 charts.
