Microsoft announced its first laptop ever Tuesday, a premium unit with a hefty price tag and the Surface nametag attached to it.

During the Windows 10 event, Microsoft announced the Surface Book laptop, which will be the "ultimate laptop," Microsoft's head of devices, Panos Panay said. Panay also said it will be the "thinnest, most powerful PC ever created." 

This is the first time that Microsoft has created its own laptops. In the past it allowed partners like HP, Dell, Toshiba and others create the laptops while Microsoft provided the operating system. With their own laptop, Microsoft is aiming high with premium specs and a slick look, CNET reports.

The 13.5-inch screen on the Surface Book laptop will be ultra-sharp with 6 million pixels. Just like the upcoming Surface Pro 4, the screen on the Surface Book will be protected by Gorilla Glass 4, preventing scratches and cracks in the screen.

Even though Microsoft announced a new tablet Tuesday, the Surface Book will also have tablet capabilities. The Surface Book's display can be detached from its base to be transformed into a tablet. Microsoft said the tablet capabilities of the Surface Book allow users to jot down notes or sketches on the screen with the Surface Pen.

During Tuesday's presentation, Microsoft noted that the keys on the Surface Book will be very quiet and backlit for use at night.

The Surface Book will be equipped with a sixth-generation Intel processor and a Nvidia graphics processor. Microsoft says that the Surface Book will be twice as fast as Apple's MacBook Pro, Engadget reports.

The Surface Book will start out at $1,499 with 128 GB of internal storage and 8 GB of RAM, but the ultra-premium version with 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM will cost $2,699.

Preorders for the Surface Book will start Wednesday and it will start appearing on store shelves on Oct. 26.
