Presidential Race 2016: Salma Hayek Joins 'Latinos For Hillary,' Backs Clinton for President
Actress Salma Hayek has made public her support for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and the star is helping the candidate launch "Latinos For Hillary."
On Oct. 1, Clinton announced that she will be launching "Latinos For Hillary," a campaign to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month, reported NBC News.
The initiative will involve several events in the next few weeks that will all focus on garnering the support of Latino voters, including an interview with Telemundo's Maria Celeste Arraras, as well as a speech at the Congressional Hispanic Conference Institute's annual awards gala on Oct. 8.
In an email supporting Clinton's campaign, Hayek expressed the importance of Latinos coming together to elect a candidate that will help the Latino community.
"We are one of the largest, youngest, and fastest-growing groups in the United States of America," Hayek said. "We deserve a candidate who respects the contributions we have made to this country and understands how important it is that our community continues to thrive, all while treating us with dignity and respect."
The actress also took the time to share her distaste for controversial Republican candidate Donald Trump, who, since announcing his candidacy for the presidency, has criticized a variety of minority groups, particularly Latino immigrants.
"It is incredible that the leading candidate of the Republican Party has been irresponsibly campaigning, using unfounded and insulting accusations against the Latino community to win votes," she said.
The actress added that voters can't let hate and discrimination determine the result of this election because it will affect Latinos and their children, who are being "labeled as criminals."
From the look of recent polls, many Latinos agree with Hayek. In a poll conducted by Univision in July, Clinton had a big lead among Latino voters. According to the poll, 73 percent of Democratic Latino voters said they would vote for Clinton. 79 percent of Latinos also said that they found Trump's comments offensive.
