Giz China reported a few days back that the shipping of the Meizu Pro 5 smartphone has been delayed due to a typhoon that stifled Meizu's production lines in Southern China. The initial Oct. 12 launch date has since been axed, and the Chinese smartphone makers have yet to announce a new launch date for the device. Basing from the seriousness of the incident, the delivery of the Meizu Pro 5 could be postponed even further.

Now, the narrative has been changed.

According to the latest statement from Meizu via Mobipicker, the delay would only be for six days and the reason for the holdup had nothing to do with a typhoon, a flood or any natural calamity, but rather because of the handset's problematic metal NFC back cover.

What do NFC back covers actually do?

Firstly, NFC or near filed communication are protocols that let electronic gadgets pair and establish radio communications with one another through touch or near proximity.

Every mobile platform has a unique NFC functionality. Whichever compatible device a user is on, a simple swipe or tap from the NFC-enabled mobile to another can be used to pay bills and do other quick transactions, as per Tech Radar.

Think of Apple Pay, Android Pay, Amiibo and Google Wallet. Simply put, NFC enables wireless data transfer even without the need for internet connection. The back cover fitted onto an NFC smartphone is crucial for the data transfer to work properly.

As for the Pro 5, it is now scheduled to release on Oct. 18. Those who have purchased the smartphone will get free accident insurance for the device, valued at $31.

Furthermore, those who bought the 32GB variant will gain a free $20 headset complements from Meizu while those who already paid for the 64GB model will receive the same headset plus Flyme coupons.

In totality, the compensation being paid by Meizu to all Pro 5 purchasers amounts to nearly $1.5 million.

Regarding the handset's specs, the Pro 5 has a huge 5.7-inch 1080p display, Samsung's eight-core Exynos 7420 on chip and support for LTE connectivity, among others. It is equipped with a 21-megapixel main camera and a five-megapixel selfie snapper while running on the Android Lollipop underneath Meizu's Flyme 5 user interface.

The Meizu Pro 5 comes in two memory variants. One with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal memory costs roughly $439 while the other with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space retails for $486.
