Cinemax Orders George R.R. Martin Series About Werewolves Titled ‘The Skin Trade’
Premium cable network Cinemax is looking to cash in on "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin's other work titled "The Skin Trade," which features werewolves.
With the massive success of "Game of Thrones" on sister channel HBO, Cinemax has greenlit a pilot script for Martin's novella, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The original story by Martin was about a young detective in a small town who finds himself investigating the gruesome murders of people that were disturbing to say the least. Their skin had been removed and eventually, the detective finds himself on the wrong end of the stick when it comes to tracking down the person, or thing that was responsible.
News of the Cinemax order was also confirmed on Martin's own blog, where he spoke highly about the project and his expectations for it.
"I am very excited to announce the Cinemax (HBO's sister company) has optioned the television rights to 'The Skin Trade,' the offbeat 'werewolf noir' novella I penned back in the late 80s," Martin wrote on his blog.
"The deal is closed, and Cinemax has ordered the pilot script. This being Hollywood, of course, you never know where things will end... but if they like the script, we'll shoot a pilot, and if they like that, hey, who knows, maybe we'll get a series on the air."
The original story was published in the horror anthology "Night Visions 5," which also had stories in it from Stephen King and Dan Simmons. It was later republished as a standalone novella and eventually went on to win the coveted World Fantasy Award.
Fans of Martin's work should not get too excited just yet. Martin himself said that the project has only gotten a script order, and there has been no guarantee it will be produced for a full season on TV. But considering the success of his other novel on HBO, he is likely to get a dedicated audience.
