‘Poltergeist’ Film Curse Gets New Documentary [Watch]
The Steven Spielberg-produced "Poltergeist" film from the early 1980s has long been rumored to have a curse attached to it for the actors and production team. Now, filmmaker Adam Ripp is producing a documentary titled "The Curse of Poltergeist" in an attempt to get to the bottom of the strange coincidences and subsequent deaths that surround the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be an attempt to explore the circumstances of the deaths and other strange phenomena said to affect those associated with the film.
The film will focus on actor Oliver Robins, who played the young boy Robbie Freeling in the first two movies.
"It will be a journey into the unknown as I attempt to understand the meaning behind the tragedies surrounding the movie," Robins told THR about the documentary. "It's something that will hopefully bring closure to a dark chapter in my life."
Although there have been several strange phenomena reported around the film and its production, it was the deaths of the two young stars Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne that struck fear into the nation.
Dunne was the first to meet tragedy. In November 1982, she was murdered by her boyfriend following an argument. He strangled her to death and was convicted of her murder. He was only sentenced to six years in prison, before being released after serving only three years.
O'Rourke's death was the next tragedy to befall the franchise. She had filmed two sequels to the original, but died before the release of a third film from a misdiagnosed case of stenosis.
There were also other deaths, including actors Julian Beck and Will Sampson, but those have been dismissed as too far removed from the franchise to be associated with a curse.
One particularly gruesome aspect of "Poltergeist's" production may be crucial to the subsequent myth: In order to save money on the cost of prosthetics, the producers flew in real dead bodies from India to be used during the swimming pool scene.
