MMA News & Notes: Johnny Hendricks Says Deer Meat Caused His Failed UFC 192 Weight Cut
Former UFC Welterweight champion Johnny "Bigg Rigg" Hendricks spoke for the first time since he failed to make weight for his UFC 192 Oct. 3 bout against Tyrone "The Chosen One" Woodley.
Hendricks was pulled from the No. 1 contender fight as he suffered from an intestinal blockage and a kidney stone, per MMA Fighting.
"Bigg Rigg" was a guest on Episode 301 of The MMA Hour, where he discussed what he was feeling before the fight and why he had difficulty cutting weight. "My weight, I hit 189 three weeks out of the fight. I was walking in at 193. I hit 189, and then that's when everything sort of started to fall apart," Hendricks said as quoted by MMA Fighting.
"That's when my body sort of started feeling different. Both my left and my right side started to hurt at that point. I went to the hospital and that's when I found out that my intestines were dried up and I had a kidney stone in my right side," he added.
After his diagnosis, he was immediately pulled from the fight and was under fire from his peers in the UFC.
The 32-year-old attributed his weight issues to venison meat. He told MMA Fighting, "I was eating a lot of deer meat and a lot of high-protein animal protein, which, that's the leading cause of kidney stones and your intestines failing you."
It's not a surprise as Hendricks had difficulty making weight as he had the same problem throughout his career, just like in UFC 171 during his first match against Robbie Lawler, in UFC 181 where he lost his title to Lawler in a rematch and in UFC 185 against Matt Brown, per MMA Junkie.
In a separate report by MMA Fighting, Hendricks has a habit of letting his weight balloon up as high as 218 pounds in between fights. With his problem, the most logical choice for the former champ is to move up to middleweight with a 185-pound limit.
