Droid Maxx 2, Droid Turbo 2 Release Date: Shatterproof Smartphones Likely To Be Introduced On Oct. 27?
Motorola and Verizon have announced they will be introducing new Droid smartphones at a grand unveiling in New York later this month.
As per The Verge, press invites for the Oct. 27 event are currently being sent out carrying the confident tagline, "Everything you expect from a phone will change."
No further details have been revealed, although the two companies did mention that fans can expect to see "the newest Droids" during the event. The ambiguity has led some creative minds to speculate that the highly rumored Droid Maxx 2 and Droid Turbo 2 could finally be introduced in two weeks' time.
The former is widely thought to be a rebranded and Verizon-exclusive version of the Moto X Play, which launched elsewhere in the world back on July 15. Hence, Android Police listed the specs of the Droid Maxx 2 to include the following:
- 5.5-inch 1080p Full HD display
- Snapdragon 615 processor
- 21-megapixel main camera
- 2 GB of RAM
- 16 GB or 32 GB of storage space
- Micro-SD expansion slot
Furthermore, Big Red subscribers will be glad to know the fittingly named Moto X Play is built for gaming and other heavy-duty visual activities as it contains a whopping 3,630 mAh battery. Could the Droid Maxx 2 pack an even larger capacity battery? Could that be what's behind the "Maxx" moniker? We'll only know for sure come Oct. 27. Mobile plans for the Droid Maxx 2 is rumored to start at $300.
As for the Droid Turbo 2, it is said to be the higher-ended smartphone of the pair. It sports a 5.5-inch QHD display, Qualcomm's eight-core Snapdragon 810 chipset and a 3,630 mAh battery. It is fitted with a 21-megapixel back camera and a five-megapixel selfie shooter. In the memory department, it has 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB or 64 GB of expandable storage space. The handset is to go out on plans with a $600 price tag.
Sources told Phandroid the Droid Turbo 2 boasts of a "shatterproof" POLED screen. The thinner plastic display with smaller bezel is more pliable than glass builds, making it less vulnerable to breakage. The Droid Maxx 2 is likely to feature the same display, but it is yet to be confirmed.
In preparation for the big event, Verizon has now launched a "Droid Landing" webpage, allowing users to register in order to be updated with the "latest Droid device launches."
Verizon said, "Your expectations of a phone will be shattered" when the new Droids arrive. Has the mobile carrier indirectly confirmed the shatterproof build? Your guess is as good as ours.
