King Kong and Godzilla will finally team for a movie.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. and Legendary are teaming up again in 2020 for "Godzilla vs. Kong" movie. This will represent the official unification of the two monster franchises.
The announcement came alongside the news that other Godzilla and King Kong films would be released. Before the 2020 teaming "Kong: Skull Island," will open on March 10, 2017, and "Godzilla 2" is slated for June 8, 2018.
The announcement also stated that Warner Bros. will release all the films even though Legendary's new home is at Universal Pictures.
During the announcement, Legendary president Thomas Tull stated "Audiences really responded to 'Godzilla.' Today, I'm excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I've always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we're pleased to be announcing that and more."
As for Warner Bros., President Kevin Tsujihara said, "Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with 'Godzilla.' It's great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn't get any bigger than this."
Warner Bros. and Legendary announced they had scheduled "Godzilla 2" for June 8, 2018 and Gareth Edwards will return as the director of the film. Last year the reboot grossed $529 million worldwide and became one of the most surprising hits of the year.
The last "King Kong" movie came out in 2005 and was directed by Peter Jackson. The film starred Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis. The movie was not a biggest box office success but it went on to win three Academy Awards.
"Kong: Skull Island," is slated to begin production on Oct. 19 with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell starring in the film.
