NFL Free Agents 2014: Darrelle Revis, Santonio Holmes To Part Ways With Teams; Seahawks Retain Michael Bennett
NFL teams are gearing up for big changes before the official start of free agency at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
A number of players are expected to be on the move and some big news has already emerged from several teams. Perhaps one of the biggest names to make a splash in the big pool of free agents could be longtime Jets defensive back Darrelle Revis, who will either be cut from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or shipped elsewhere, according to sources.
In other news surrounding veteran stars, kicker Adam Vinatieri has agreed to make a return to the Indianapolis Colts on a surprising multi-year contract. What makes it all so surprising is that he is 41 years old despite his continued success in the league.
In New York, the Giants appear to be ready to give running back Peyton Hillis another chance in the backfield; the former Madden cover athlete agreed to a two-year deal with the team and is expected to complete his contract once a physical is passed in New York on Tuesday.
On the AFC side of New York football news, the Jets made a move that many were anticipating for quite some time. The team released Santonio Holmes, a former star wide receiver who largely disappointed during his tenure in New York despite a massive contract.
In Seattle, the defending Super Bowl Champions found a way to retain star defensive end Michael Bennett. According to ESPN's sources, the Seahawks wrapped up Bennett with a four-year deal worth more than $28 million, and $16 million of it is guaranteed. In other defensive end-related news, the Tampa Bay Bucs agreed to terms on a four-year, $43.75 million deal with free agent Michael Johnson, who must have been thrilled to get that kind of money after registering only 3.5 sacks a year after tallying 11.5.
