UFC: Joseph Duffy Believes He'll Quickly Defeat Conor McGregor Again in a Rematch
Interim UFC featherweight champion "Notorious" Conor McGregor has come a long way after making his debut with the organization. He has won five of his UFC bouts and has a 13-fight winning streak since 2011, per Sherdog.
His last recorded loss was against fellow Irishman Joseph "Irish Joe" Duffy, who submitted him via an arm-triangle choke in just 38 seconds. Duffy, who left mixed martial arts in 2011 and returned in 2014, was recently signed by the UFC last January, as reported by Bloody Elbow.
"Irish Joe" won his UFC debut via TKO against Jake Lindsey last March on UFC 185, then went on to win via submission against Ivan Jorge on UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs Leites last July. Duffy is now scheduled to fight Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC Fight Night 76 in the lightweight division.
McGregor was not impressed with Duffy. In an interview with MMA Fighting, the interim champ said, "I look at his career. He lost his Cage Warriors lightweight title that I lost, he submitted in the fourth round, he filled his [expletive] with excuses. He quit the sport. He moved countries, he changed teams."
"I would definitely love to KO him stiff and put him in the ground or send him back to his other sport that he ran to after he lost," McGregor added.
The 27-year-old champion was referring to Duffy's career in boxing. After leaving MMA in 2011, he competed in boxing and went on to win seven of all his fights, winning two by knockout, per BoxRec.
In a recent interview with The MMA Hour, "Irish Joe" explained why he never returned back some of the words McGregor have said since his debut. "It's just not really my style. I'm not too bothered by what Conor's thoughts are on opponents. I wasn't really going to get a lot out of having a trash-talking battle there. I'm just concentrating on my fight and forgetting about all that," Duffy said as quoted by MMA Fighting.
But he also believes that he can easily beat the interim UFC featherweight champ. "I believe I can take Conor out just as quickly. Everything Conor does, I feel can beat him at, he uses more kicks. There's not an area I feel he can beat me," he added.
For the two to have a rematch, Duffy should improve his ranking to become a contender and McGregor to move up to lightweight. According to MMA Fighting, there's no guarantee that the two will ever have their rematch.
