'Goosebumps' Tops Weekend Box Office, Earns $23.5M
The Jack Black-starrer "Goosebumps" took the first spot for the weekend box office, according to USA Today. "The Martian" is down to number 2.
The PG-rated thriller movie "Goosebumps" earned a total of $23.5 million on domestic box office this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Inspired by R.L. Stine's famous and bestselling young adult book series, Jack Black plays as Stine in a story where the monsters he created in his books come to life.
"Goosebumps" also stars Dylan Minnette as Zach Cooper and Odeya Rush as Hannah, Stine's daughter. The film is distributed by Sony and is set to be released in more parts of the world in the coming days and months.
On Oct. 21, the movie will be released in the Philippines. Moreover, it is slated to premiere in Hong Kong, Brazil and Cambodia on Oct. 22 and in Bulgaria, India, Kenya and Nigeria on Oct. 23, according to the release date schedule posted on International Movie Database.
Getting 71 percent rating in TomatoMeter and 78 percent Audience Score from Rotten Tomatoes, one of the reviews noted that "Goosebumps will satisfy its core audience - fans of R.L. Stine's popular children's books - and bore pretty much everyone else." This is according to James Berardinelli, a Top Critic from Reel Views.
Moreover, Adam Graham from Detroit News shared that the movie is not "detached or ironic." He also said that "Goosebumps" does not pretend to be something that it is not. "It's a bonus for fans who pored over the books and it celebrates the fun side of things going bump in the night."
Meanwhile, other top contenders at this weekends' box office results are Matt Damon's "The Martian." Currently running for two weeks now, the 2015 American sci-film went down to number 2 having earned $21.5 million after Sunday's estimates.
In total, the movie's domestic gross as of Oct. 18 is $144 million. Meanwhile, its global ticket earnings already reached more than $175 million.
Another thriller movie currently showing in theaters is "Crimson Peak." However, according to CNN, even though it stars huge names such as Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain, the movie failed to perform well in the box office. Placing at the fourth spot in the weekend box office, "Crimson Peak," with production budget of $55 million, only earned $13 million.
Other movies that are currently in theaters right now are "Bridge of Spies" starring Tom Hanks, the American 3D computer animated fantasy-comedy movie "Hotel Transylvania 2" and the British-American-Australian 3D fantasy adventure, "Pan."
