Ellen DeGeneres' wife Portia de Rossi is rumored to be heartbroken, after the talk show host opposed her plans for the couple to adopt.

According to Celebrity Dirty Laundry, sources close to the Hollywood pair fear the latest disagreement could spell the end for their relationship and land them in divorce court.

"It's been a difficult year for them behind closed doors," a source said.

In fact, much of the couple's recent discord has played out in public for all to see. According to the website, in 2014 the pair's constant bickering led de Rossi to a drug and alcohol treatment center with a drinking problem.

Earlier this year, In Touch Weekly also reported the two recently had a huge fight, after returning from a vacation to South Africa, over de Rossi's career plans and rumors of DeGeneres' infidelity.

"Portia told Ellen that once she starts filming 'Scandal' again, she'll be married to her job," a source said.

Apparently, that news came as a complete and sobering shock to the 57-year-old DeGeneres, who has long been rumored to seemingly control her wife's every move.

"They wound up in a big screaming match and didn't speak again for days," a source said of the confrontation. "It doesn't look like they will ever be able to get back on track."

Before that, several media websites also reported de Rossi had been steadfastly pressuring DeGeneres to spend more time with her working on their marriage and to cut back on her heavy workload.

DeGeneres' current talk show deal expires in 2017, and she reportedly has already told staffers this may signal the end of the show.

More recently, DeGeneres and de Rossi were rumored to have been feuding over the talk show host's plans to undergo a complete makeover. Radar Online reported much of DeGeneres' rationale for the change was fueled by rumors that Oprah Winfrey planned return to the talk show circuit.
