Ed Sheeran Officially Dr. Sheeran: 'Thinking Out Loud' Singer Receives Honorary Doctorate Degree
"Thinking Out Loud" singer Ed Sheeran may be an honorary doctorate degree holder but unlike any other honoris causa recipients, he does not encourage teens to study for college.
The 24-year-old British crooner was awarded on Monday an honorary doctorate from his hometown university, University Campus Suffolk in Ipswich, according to a People report. Sheeran, who hails from Framlingham, Suffolk received the honor for his "outstanding contribution to music."
Clad in a white rolled-up top and a tie beneath a red-and-blue graduation robe matched with a tam hat, the hit maker still shown off his classic Sheeran style -- exposing his tattoos and sporting a pair of Chucks -- as he gave his acceptance speech.
"I'm not really the poster boy for education and I don't know if I can give advice on that side of things," Sheeran told his audience at Ipswich town hall, as reported by Mirror UK. "I just chose something I love and worked hard at it and didn't really listen to anyone who told me I couldn't do something."
Sheeran also said in his speech that it is important to choose something that "you love and work hard at it and you'll be surprised how far you can get."
True to his words, this was what Sheeran had done years ago, after he left school at age 16 to focus on his music career. Now, the redhead singer holds numerous awards for music, including a Grammy, atop his recently received honoris causa award.
Prior to receiving the honorary doctorate degree, Sheeran shared his beliefs about getting a higher education as he was interviewed by Press Association. He said that younger ones should just "chill" instead of being worried because the orthodox set-up of getting a college education and seizing a job does not really work for anyone.
"I think there's a lot of pressure on kids to go to university, then a lot of them end up in debt with a degree they didn't really need to get the job they want," he explained. Instead, Sheeran encourage teens to travel. He even mentioned about going to Thailand and grabbing a few bottle of beers.
He added that entering universities does not always guarantee everyone a job, then eventually admitted that it felt kind of awkward discouraging teens not to study for college despite his receipt of an honorary doctorate degree.
After receiving his award, the crooner took it to Instagram as he posted a photo of him on Instagram saying that he just graduated and can be officially called Dr. Sheeran. He also made quipped on his Twitter account of how 'mad' the world as he got an honorary doctorate degree.
