In light of the recent violent attacks and several killings happening between Palestine and Israel, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon visited Jerusalem Tuesday and urged for calm and peace between the two neighbouring countries.

Hoping for Palestine and Israel to finally end the month-long unrest, Ban said at a press conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as quoted by the Associated Press, "These are difficult times for Israelis and Palestinians. I am here in the hope that we can work together to end the violence, ease the tensions and begin to restore a long term political horizon of peace."

The violence that has killed eight Israelis and more than 40 Palestinians, including attackers, according to a report from BBC News, sparked when rumors circulated that Israel was taking over inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City.

"I deplore the random attacks against civilians, such terror attacks make every place unsafe and every person regardless to gender or age a potential victim," Ban said as quoted by the Associated Press.

"We need to keep the situation from escalation into a religious conflict, with potential regional implications," he added. Meanwhile, Netanhayu explained briefly what might be the cause of the Palestinian attacks.

"President Abbas unfortunately has been fanning the flames. President Abbas has not condemned a single one of the 30 terrorist attacks against Israelis over the last month and he continues to glorify the terrorists as heroes," he said per the Associated Press.

Although it has been reported that Israel denied the rumors surrounding Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site sacred to Jews and Muslims, Netanhayu further claimed that it was because of the incitement of Palestinian leaders including President Mahmoud Abbas.

"President Abbas unfortunately has been fanning the flames. President Abbas has not condemned a single one of the 30 terrorist attacks against Israelis over the last month and he continues to glorify the terrorists as heroes," Netanhayu said as quoted by the Associated Press.

He further claimed that "President Abbas has joined ISIS and Hamas in claiming that Israel threatens the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This Mr. Secretary is a total lie."

Meanwhile, as Palestinians continue to barricade the inside of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by throwing stones and firebombs, Ban pushed for the two involved countries to let down their weapons.

"My visit reflects the sense of global alarm at the dangerous escalation in violence between Israelis and Palestinians, If we do not act fast, the dynamics on the ground will only get worse," Ban said as quoted by BBC News, adding, "You must put down the weapons of despair."
