'Divergent' Star Shailene Woodley Says 'Twilight' Book and Movie Series Encourages Unhealthy Relationships
Divergent star Shailene Woodley has spoken out against the Twilight movie and book series, saying that it encourages unhealthy relationships.
In the new issue of Teen Vogue, which features the beautiful actress on the cover, the 22-year-old made it clear that she isn't necessarily a fan of this or any other book series adaptation, especially Twilight. "'Twilight,' I'm sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve," she said in her interview, according to CBS News.
She is, however, happy with her choice of playing in Divergent, according to The Huffington Post. Woodley, 22, feels that Divergent is "so metaphorical to today's society," and after consulting with The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, felt that her role in the film would be pivotal to her career.
Divergent, based on the novel by Veronica Roth, takes place in the city of Chicago in the near future. The city is divided into 5 factions: Abnegation, meant for the selfless; Amity, meant for the peaceful; Candor, meant for the honest; Dauntless, meant for the brave; and Erudite, meant for the knowledgeable. On a given day each year, all 16-year-olds take an aptitude test that will tell them for which faction they are best suited. After receiving the results of their test, they must decide whether to remain with their family or transfer to a new faction.
The movie co-stars Ashley Judd, Zoë Kravitz, and Maggie Q. Summit Entertainment purchased the media rights to the book, and production on the movie took place in 2013, also titled Divergent. The second novel in the trilogy, Insurgent, was published on May 1, 2012, and the third and final book, Allegiant, on Oct. 22, 2013. The film will open in theatres on March 21.
