The New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs yesterday in a decisive Game 4, clearing their path to the World Series and destroying the hopes of Cubs fans to fulfill the prophecy set in 1985's "Back to the Future Part II."

The Mets beat the Cubs 8-3 in the fourth game of the National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field on Wednesday night, capping the team's first postseason sweep in franchise history.

Among the most notable highlights of the game was Daniel Murphy's two-run homer in the eighth inning. It was the sixth game in a row that he had knocked it out of the park, breaking the postseason record.

"Words can't describe it right now," teammate Michael Cuddyer said of Murphy's feat, according to ESPN. "The way he's playing, the way he's swinging the bat, if I tried to describe it with words, I'd be doing an understatement. So I'm not even going to try."

Perhaps it's fitting that the player Murphy surpassed for the record was Carlos Beltran, who hit a homer in five straight postseason games with the Houston Astros in 2004. Beltran went on to sign a seven-year contract with the Mets that summer.

Lucas Duda also managed to break from his slump at the most opportune time, delivering a three-run homer in the first inning. He followed up with a two-run double in the second to put the Mets up 6-0, finishing the game with five RBIs. Prior to this game, Duda had gone 3-for-24 at bat.

Travis d'Arnaud also hit a home run in the first, right after Duda's long ball. It was the first time since 1988 that the Mets hit back-to-back homers in the postseason, and only the second time in franchise history.

While the Mets will move on to their first World Series since 2000, it was a somber night for Cubs' fans. The team hasn't won a World Series since 1908, a century-long drought.

Even more ironic was that the game fell on "Back to the Future" Day. In the 1985 sequel, lead character Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) travels in time to Oct. 15, 2015. Among the many predictions the film got wrong was that the Cubs had finally won the World Series.

Game 1 of the World Series will open on Tuesday. The Mets will face either the Kansas City Royals or the Toronto Blue Jays.
