‘Gambit’ Movie Updates: Marvel Narrows Down Directing Gig To 3 Finalists, Check List Here
As part of Marvel's mega family, "Gambit" is already one of next year's most anticipated films. The cast and crew behind the superhero project are still not complete, notably missing a director to helm the movie. Now, three names are speculated to lead the race to direct the new installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
According to Jeff Sneider of The Wrap, "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman is being eyed to be the man behind the new "Gambit" film.
Sneider posted on his Twitter account, "True that Channing Tatum has been courting Doug Liman to direct GAMBIT. We'll see if he goes for it though..."
While Liman, who propelled the "Edge of Tomorrow" and "The Bourne Identity" into an explosive action box-office hit, would undeniably be a great choice to direct the Marvel superhero film, there are other names being thrown into the hat as of now.
A report from Heroic Hollywood revealed two other directors, who are being considered to take the high-profile film into their hands: Joe Cornish of "Attack the Black" and Shane Black of "Iron Man 3." Both of them have strong ties and previous experience with the MCU as Cornish also earned the story and screenplay credit of the recent "Ant-Man."
Channing Tatum's "Gambit" was left reeling and scrambling for a director after Rupert Wyatt exited the film over creative differences with the Fox studio executives, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
His agent Brian Swardstrom explained the director's decision, saying, "It's not necessarily acrimonious. The studios, with these big movies, have very specific visions of what they want. They don't necessarily want an auteur who's going to try to reinvent the franchise. Of course the studios would love it if a director did what they want, when they want, but it doesn't always work out."
According to one executive, who has worked with the "Planet of the Apes" director, Wyatt is someone who's driven to create quality work.
"I think he's a very principled guy," he explained. "He wants to make the best version of something, and he's so desperately afraid of making something not good that it's easier to walk away than be pushed by committee."
While the director's chair is still empty, the producers are slowly building the cast with Tatum, Lea Seydoux on board so far.
"Gambit" is scheduled to be released on Oct. 7, 2016. Production is in the works to begin in early spring.
