'Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2' News, Release Date: James Gunn Hints at New Addition to Team
"Guardians of the Galaxy" was one of the stand out films of 2013 and arguably the best film Marvel has ever made. So you might imagine that there is a lot of hype building around any new information on the sequel.
Director James Gunn just fed that fire by talking to fans on Facebook and added intrigue to the proceedings, per The Hollywood Reporter, making note that there will be another new character joining the team.
Gunn promised that the new movie would be similar to the first film with some divergences. That means that the tone will likely remain aloof; that divergence of tone was a major welcome amid the more angst ridden "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
Gunn also talked about baby Groot making a return, though he apparently is not to the liking of Drax.
And then comes the big news.
"I'm not going to give names and I won't give numbers either, but there will be at least one new character," Gunn said. "There will be no other humans -- humans being earthlings -- besides [Chris Pratt's character] Quill."
He also killed any hopes of an Avengers and Guardians team-up, noting that he was more interested in delving deeper into his current crop of characters rather than just putting names in film for no particular reason. Gunn did a fantastic job in the first film of blending the diverging personalities while also exploring their inner turmoil and conflicts. Contrast that with the "Avengers" movies which struggled to keep track of all the heroes.
Another salient point from Gunn included a hint that Adam Warlock could show up in a future film.
"You guys gotta wait and see," he said. "But, you know, you can't -- everything's going to be different in the 'Infinity Wars.'"
"Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2" is currently in pre-production with an expected launch in 2017. Gunn's first iteration of the hero team was a huge at the box office, amassing $333 million in the U.S.
