Jon M. Chu's nostalgic reboot of 1980s cartoon show of the same title, "Jem and the Holograms," whimpered in its box office debut and had embarrassingly been the flop of all flops for Universal Studios after earning only $1.3 million in its weekend entrance.

The movie adaptation with a  $5 million budget was released in 2,413 theaters across North America and has roughly made a tragic $537 earnings per theater, alighting the movie on box office's dismal 15th spot, BuzzFeed News reports.

"Jem and the Holograms" was also reported to be the third film released in over 2,000 theaters to enter a worst first-run on a weekend. Topping the list of worst is the animated tale "Delgo" released in 2008 which earned only $511,920 in 2,160 theaters or about $237 per theater then followed by "Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure" in 2012 with $206 per theater earnings or a total of $443,901 in 2,160 theaters. Despite the movie being produced by a major studio, and being promoted by a major marketing company, the movie landed on worst list's third spot as it failed to spark interest among viewers.

"Jem and the Holograms" helmer Chu has admitted it was not the best weekend of his life while he was interviewed last Saturday during the Filmmaker Keynote at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles. The director, who was behind "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," "Step Up 2: The Streets" and "Now You See Me 2," also revealed that the movie flop had been rough on his part.

"So, this is a bit awkward only because I'm supposed to be here this morning talking about how great it is to be in the movie business -- it's so awesome -- but currently, I don't know if you've looked at box office numbers, this morning specifically, it hasn't been the greatest," Chu said as he laughed, The Hollywood Reporter says. "So you might get some real sh-t today."   

Although the helmer has worked extensively for the movie alongside producer Jason Blum, who developed the "Jem and the Holograms" remake for 10 years, fans were not seemed to be amazed and even sent Chu some death threats regarding the movie.

"I get fans sending me hate mail, I get death threats, I get racist remarks -- it's a really fun business," he said. "Reviewers have been harsh, to say it lightly ... I'll probably get some texts along the way today saying it's not going anywhere. So this morning isn't the best kind of day."  

While "Jem and the Holograms" flopped in box office during the weekend, "The Martian" has hit the top $15.9 million followed by "Goosebumps" and "Bridges of Spies" with $15.5 million and $11.4 million respectively.
