Earlier this month, Sony announced that in the month of February it had reached the 6 million mark of PlayStation 4 units sold since its launch late last year.

While PS4 seemed to be more popular choice among consumers, as Microsoft's Xbox One has lagged a bit behind in units sold, Microsoft has beat out Sony on a dollar basis, according to PC Magazine.

According to the NPD Group, because the Xbox One is priced at $499.99 while the PS4 is sold for $399.99, Microsoft actually made more money.

Microsoft issued a statement regarding its sales for the month of February and the successful release of Titanfall, a multi-player, first-person shooter game that was released soley for Microsoft products.

"Xbox One continues selling at a record-breaking pace with 258,000 units sold in the U.S. in the month of February, surpassing Xbox 360 sales by over 61 percent at the same point in time," according to the press release.

Though Titanfall was released for Xbox One last week, Xbox 360 gamers will have to wait until March 25 to grab a copy.

In the press release, Microsoft also boasted that it had sold 772,000 games last month while selling an average of 2.75 games per console.

In the U.S., the sales from game hardware saw a 42 percent increase in February amounting to $347 million, while consoles sales also saw a 60 percent increase, according to NPD.

"Within console hardware, we continue to see strong year-over-year increases due to the success of the Xbox One and PS4," NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

Sales from new hardware, software and accessories reached $887 million last month, which was a 9 percent increase from February 2013.

More people picked up Call of Duty: Ghosts last month, making it the February's top-selling game with The Lego Movie Videogame, NBA 2K14, Thief and Grand Theft Auto V, following close behind.
