'Switched at Birth' Season 5 Spoilers: Daphne, Bay Move to China in Coming Season
After Season 4 of "Switched at Birth" ended with Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano) making a spur-of-the-moment decision to spend their summer in China, showrunners are busy planning how Season 5 will play out in the new location.
The finale has come and gone, but it left fans of the ABC Family show on edge with a cliffhanger. Viewers got a brief preview of upcoming events, seeing Daphne and Bay 10 months later, employed in the communist country and speaking Mandarin.
Show creator Lizzy Weiss spoke to The Wrap about Season 5. She revealed that the point of the time jump was to illustrate how the planned six-week summer trip could end up being a life changing event for the protagonists, saying, “10 months seemed like a long enough period that Bay could become a tattoo artist and pick up some Mandarin, and Daphne could get a job at a clinic.”
According to Weiss, not everything for Season 5 is fleshed out, but, she said, “There is a general plan.”
One of the most dramatic events to occur in Season 4 was the birth of Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Lily's (Rachel Shenton) child.
“The baby has been a big part of the season that we’ve touched upon a bunch of times, and has been part of our larger series conversation about difference,” Weiss said, adding that birth was “a really beautiful moment, and one of my favorites, not just in the episode, but in the series."
Aside from simply being moving, the birth of the baby also raised a serious subject, as the newborn was revealed to have Down syndrome.
Speaking to The Mary Sue, Weiss explained that showrunners cast an infant with Down syndrome for the scene with the newborn, and that it “never crossed our mind to shoot that scene any other way.” The producer added, “There is a talent agent who handles (I believe almost exclusively) actors with Down syndrome, so there is a system out there to find whomever you need.”
“Switched at Birth” will return for Season 5 on ABC Family in 2016.
