Chvrches' Lauren Mayberry recently opened up about a past abusive relationship in a personal essay she penned for Lenny Letter, the newsletter created by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner.

The Scottish band's frontwoman discussed her experience of enduring domestic violence from an emotionally dysfunctional partner, according to NME.

"We were arguing, again. Like most times it happened, I wasn't quite sure why he was so upset," she started off the essay. "I had tried to placate him; I had tried to reason; I had tried to apologize, but nothing seemed to be having any impact other than making the situation worse. Then he backed me against a wall and slammed his hand repeatedly on the surface above my head. When I broke down in shock, he said, 'Oh, don't act like I hit you.' That moment was the final wake-up call I shouldn't have needed."

Mayberry went on to elaborate about the constant violence she faced in her relationship. She recounted how her ex pulled her by the arms and wrists when he was frustrated or thought she wasn't listening. She also recalled hearing him slam doors. In one traumatic event, he grabbed the steering wheel of her vehicle while she was driving because he wanted her to pull over so they could "talk." When she refused to stop the car, he repeatedly screamed and banged his fists on the dashboard, Mayberry explained.

After being exposed to this ongoing cycle of violence, Mayberry said she felt like "a weak person who would fail at anything she tried so I shouldn't bother." Eventually she found the strength to leave the toxic relationship and changed the locks to her flat to ensure her own safety.

"I thought I couldn't be a victim because I am a strong, shrewd person," she wrote, "but there is no typical victim -- almost 50 percent of American woman and men experience some form of psychological aggression by a partner in their lifetime, according to the CDC."

"Girls creator" Dunham and Konner launched the Lenny Letter last month. The email newsletter discusses various topics, such as feminism, style politics, health, friendship, relationships and more.  

Chvrches released their new album, "Every Open Eye," on Sept. 21. The album is the follow-up to the band's debut album "The Bones of What You Believe." So far "Every Open Eye" has produced the singles "Leave a Trace," "Never Ending Circles" and "Clearest Blue."
