Actress Kristen Stewart is set to witness to an axe murder in the new "Lizzie Borden" film.

The film is based on the real life of Borden, a girl who was acquitted of horrific axe murders in the 19th century. The case would later generate widespread attention across the nation and the world. According to Variety, Stewart will be taking on the role of Bridget Sullivan, a maid who was present in the house when Borden committed her now famous acts of violent murder.

Although this is not the first time the story has been immortalized on the big screen or other popular media, the film is expected to be the first to take on the subject with a large budget and high-profile production quality.

The title character will be played by "Big Love" actress Chloë Sevigny, who was slated to take the same role in an HBO mini-series project that was planned by Tom Hanks. That project never left the planning phase and was shelved, but eventually yielded the coming full-length feature.

Borden was a young girl accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe. She was brought to trial for the murders, but was later acquitted for the crimes and released back into the public.

Sullivan was the Bordens' live-in housemaid who was home at the time of the murders. She would later famously testify at Lizzie Borden's trial, but to no avail given the eventual acquittal.

The Borden case has become a popular subject in pop-culture ever since, inspiring many different books, TV shows and films. There was even a nursery rhyme about her that began, "Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother 40 whacks."

The film is expected to follow the events that led up to the double murder. The project itself has not been titled at this time, and there are no production or release dates yet either.
