Halloween Film: 5 Movies to Watch in Theaters for Halloween
With Halloween coming in a few days, audiences will want to see a scary movie to frighten them or as a way to celebrate the holiday. The following is a list of five films currently in theaters that audiences should see during the weekend to celebrate the holiday.
1. "Goodnight Mommy": Austria's Oscar submission is by far one of the most frightening films currently in theaters. While it is a slow burn film that takes some time to get moving, the payoff is worth the wait as it becomes suspenseful and incredibly difficult to watch. Seeing two boys torture their mother is probably more painful than any "Saw" movie put together. It is not only an excruciatingly painful sequence but it is also terrifying. While it is not playing nationwide, the movie is available in multiple cities and is a definite must see.
2. "Crimson Peak": Guillermo del Toro has done it again with this lavish romance set in the Victorian time period and containing numerous ghost stories. The film is beautifully detailed from its sets to its costumes and the performances from its cast, led by Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska, are wonderful. That being said, those expecting a horror film will be disappointed as it is more of a romance with the atmosphere of a horror film.
3. "Hotel Transylvania 2": Children may be excited to revisit the monster hotel in Sony's latest animated film. Voiced by Selena Gomez, Mel Brooks, Adam Sandler, Molly Shannon and many more the film has garnered critical acclaim and has captured the box office. While it is not a scary movie, the film has the spirit of Halloween with ghost characters, vampires, and werewolves.
4. "Goosebumps": Back in the '90s, R.L. Stine captured the spirit of monster stories with his acclaimed books "Goosebumps." Now Sony has successfully brought to life many of the monsters that made the series so memorable from Slappy to the invisible boy. The film is a mashup where all the monsters team up to kill R.L. Stine, who is brilliantly played by Jack Black. The film has been critically praised and has become a box office success that should continue to play well to audiences this holiday weekend.
5. "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension": For those interested in revisiting the supernatural for the sixth time, this will be the right fit. While reviews are quite terrible and box office was weak, this should be a good fit for those interested in a big scare. The film uses the found footage method, which is still effective and which creates the right mood.
