Fans of the much celebrated "Star Trek" franchise will be pleased to know that the show will be making its way back to TV for a whole new series on CBS.

According to Deadline, the franchise is now celebrating its 50th anniversary, and there is no better way to ring in the celebrations than to announce the newest addition to the saga.

David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios, made the announcement.

"There is no better time to give 'Star Trek' fans a new series than on the heels of the original show's 50th anniversary celebration," Stapf said in the announcement. "Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we're excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately."

Although the new show is expected to premiere on CBS in January 2017, the show will then be ushered over to its new home on the CBS pay-streaming platform CBS All Access.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is expected to tackle a whole new set of stories with all-new characters. This tactic likely allows showrunners to avoid crossover issues with the batch of "Star Trek" films currently in theaters. 

Still, popular themes from the original series will be present, as the new crew seeks out distant worlds and civilizations, boldly going where no man has gone before.

Suffice it to say that "the final frontier" will remain canon for the coming series, just with new characters to fill the classic starship roles.

The original series ran for 79 episodes over three seasons on CBS starting back in 1966. It later generated four spin offs, including "The Next Generation" (1987-1994), "Deep Space Nine" (1993-99), "Voyager" (1995-2001) and "Enterprise" (2001-05).
