Javier Hernandez Breaks Mexican Scoring Record
Javier Hernandez found the net once again in this year's UEFA Champions League.
In Bayer Leverkusen's 3-2 loss, " Chicharito" scored in the 51st minute of play against Roma. Although a disappointing loss, Hernandez made history yet again. That was his fourth goal of this year's UEFA Champions League group stage, the most by any Mexican-born player ever. What makes that so impressive is the fact there have been so many talented Mexican players, such as Hugo Sanchez, and there are still two group stage games remaining.
Hernandez previously scored two goals against Roma in a 4-4- draw in his last game, one of which was a penalty kick. Hernandez scored a another goal against BATE Borisov in a dominating 4-1 victory in the first group stage game.
Bayer Leverkusen is now 1-1-2 with four points. That's good enough for third place in Group E behind Roma and Barcelona. It's going to be very difficult to overtake Barcelona with the way Neymar and Luis Suarez are playing, but Hernandez and Leverkusen will get to face them in the final Group E game.
Hernandez is not only the only Mexican-born player to ever score four goals in a Champions League group stage, but he is also the only Mexican to score for three different clubs in the exclusive tournament. Last year Hernandez scored for Real Madrid, and back in the 2012-13 Champions League, he scored with Manchester United.
Not only has Hernandez scored with three different clubs, but he has managed to score with three different league clubs as well; English Premier League, La Liga and Bundesliga. His four goals this tournament give him 12 career Champions League strikes, that's significant because it's the most by any CONCACAF player ever.
Hernandez didn't really fit in with Real Madrid, but he has been on fire with Bayern Leverkusen. His four goals are tied for the second most in this Champions League tournament. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five goals, has more than Hernandez so far.
