'Castle' Season 8 Recap: Rick Suspects Partner in High Stakes Investigation, Attention Remains on Beckett
On Monday, a new episode of "Castle," entitled "Cool Boys." finds Rick's (Nathan Fillion) year filled with one strange twist after another, as he continues to struggle with Beckett's (Stana Katic) departure.
Already this season, the mystery writer has seen his newlywed wife abruptly leave him without much cause or explanation. Now he must deal with a partner he suspects of being involved in the very high-profile robbery the two are working together to solve.
Design Trend reports in Episode 6 of Season 8, Adam Baldwin reprises the role of lawman Ethan Slaughter, who quickly goes from investigator to suspect in Castle's mind after a body is discovered at a crime scene.
Castle's patience seems short as he probes this latest mystery, his attention span wrecked by his ongoing issues with Beckett. In the last episode, entitled "The Nose," he seemed to receive a jolt of optimism, when a psychic reassured him that his wife still has deep feelings for him and hinted that a reconciliation was inevitable.
In the final moments of that episode, Castle is picking up her things from the home they once shared when he finds one of her scented NYPD tees, which Beckett strategically left her husband to remind him of her.
"You can read into that a little bit," co-showrunner Alexi Hawley said of the intimate scene. "That's a really powerful last moment that shows you that all that love is still there."
Fellow showrunner Terence Paul Winter also commented on Beckett's ongoing probe into the LokSat mystery and her determination to protect her husband from any potential backlash.
"The reason why she created this separation, again, is out of love. She wants him to remember her, so yes, she knows what she's doing," Winter said.
Many of the questions concerning the couple's long-term prospects are expected to be answered in an upcoming episode entitled "Mr. & Mrs. Castle" slated to air later this month.
"His questions about what's really going on are what's ultimately driving us to the end of the fall finale," Hawley added. "But I do think that even though she was talking about moving out and she got her stuff, what happened with The Nose and everything definitely relieved him a bit."
