Detroit Woman Apologizes for Causing Fire in Attempt to Kill Bedbug Infestation
A Detroit woman apologized this week after she accidentally caused a massive fire in an attempt to get rid of bedbugs on Tuesday.
The Detroit Free Press reports resident Sherry Young and four others were injured in the blaze, which decimated the 48-unit Ramblewood Apartments complex.
The incident began when Young, on advice from a neighbor, left her kitchen oven and stove on overnight in an attempt to eradicate her bedbug infestation. When Young returned, she sprayed herself with rubbing alcohol and spread it across her apartment.
Her actions resulted in an enormous fire so strong that it caused the building's roof to cave in. Nine fire engines and 60 personnel were required to stop the blaze, but they could not save the complex.
Of the five injured, three were firefighters. One sustained a neck burn from a piece of collapsed ceiling, while the other two were treated for smoke inhalation. Many residents were displaced by the fire. Apartment management attempted to move most residents to other units, but some, such as those with disabilities, found placement difficult.
Young gave a heartfelt apology to her displaced neighbors.
"I feel so bad about everything, and my neighbors mostly," she said over the phone to the press. "They didn't deserve that."
Young had been dealing with bedbugs for close to a year before the incident. She said she was living in "a state of torment," with the pests reappearing after numerous attempts to exterminate.
In desperation, the woman turned on the stove and oven and spent the night in her car. She then began dousing the floor with alcohol, setting a fire in the kitchen floor that quickly spread to her boots. Young ran for the fire department, but then decided to go back to warn her neighbors. She soon passed out from the smoke. Young was rescued and taken to the hospital for burns.
The Detroit Fire Department ruled the fire an accident.
"I'm trying to get back to my life, and now these ... bugs have taken all of my hopes and dreams and aspirations away," Young said. "I'm feeling desperate. I'm being tormented. I'm living in a nightmare."
